About Gaiters & Half Chaps
Both leather gaiters and horse riding half chaps are designed to be worn with jodhpur or paddock boots. They are popular with many riders as they are convenient, comfortable, easy to wear and a cheaper alternative to long riding boots. However there are some differences between the two
Gaiters
Leather gaiters are designed to create the illusion of a long riding boot. Leather gaiters fit smoothly around the riders calf to offer the rider support and protection when riding. Although they are generally made from leather, leather gaiters tend to be more soft, and flexible compared to long riding boots making them comfortable to wear from the get go. Leather gaiters also have secure zippers up the back of the leg and are cut slightly higher on the outside, giving them an elegant and sleek finish, thats great for competition
Chaps
Like leather gaiters, chaps are made to fit over your riding shoes and give you better grip and more support in the saddle. The main difference between a leather gaiter and a half chap is that chaps usually have a zipper on the outside and can be made from a range of different materials such as synthetic leather or suede. They are a great value choice for casual riders.
Fitting Advice
When it comes to fitting your leather gaiters or chaps to make sure to measure the widest part of your calf, and the height up the back of your leg from the floor to the back of your knee. Gaiters & Half Chaps FAQs
Can you ride without gaiters or half chaps?
Yes you can absolutely ride without Gaiters or Half Chaps. However it is not recommended. Half Chaps & Gaiters are designed to protect the riders legs from rubbing and gettign pinched against the saddle and stirrup leathers.
whats the difference between Gaiters & Half Chaps?
Half chaps tend to be a cheaper alternative to gaiters and are suitable for everyday wear. They are made from softer suede materials and fasten on the outside of the leg. Gaiters are smarter, usually made from leather and fasten at the back of the leg to create the illusion of long riding boots, making them suitable for competition riding.
Whats the alternative to Gaiters or Half Chaps?
Long riding boots would be the most suitable option to wear when riding if you do not wish to wear gaiters or half chaps.
