Exercise Sheets Size Guide
Also known as quarter sheets, exercise sheets are a type of horse rug with a shorter design and smaller size than classic horse rugs.
These sheets serve an important purpose as they regulate your horse’s body temperature and provide essential protection from the elements during riding. This helps prevent injury to both the horse and rider, making them an integral addition to every ride.
At Ayr Equestrian, we want to ensure you and your horse always enjoy a comfortable ride. Read on as we share everything you need to know to find the perfect-sized exercise sheet for your horse.
Measurement Instructions
To measure for an exercise sheet use a soft measuring tape to measure the length of your horse’s back, starting from their withers going all the way to their tail. Next, measure the width of the horse’s chest, positioning the tape behind their front legs and the widest part of their hindquarters.
Once you have these measurements, subtract 10cm to determine the best exercise sheet size for your horse. For example, if your horse measures 160cm, their ideal sheet size is 150cm.
Fit Guidance
Your horse’s exercise sheet must cover their hindquarters and reach just past their tail without getting caught. It should be wide enough to cover their sides without restricting movement or being loose enough to flap during riding.
Remember to take climate conditions into consideration, too. Your exercise sheet may need to be waterproof for rainy or snowy climates or fleece-lined to provide warmth in the winter, especially for horses with a thin coat density.
Adjustments
Exercise sheets are fully adjustable for a comfortable and secure fit. Place the sheet on your horse’s back with the front edge sitting against their withers and the rear end hanging near their tail.
Adjust the sheet so that it fits snugly against their sides, and fasten the front closure to keep the sheet in place. It should not be tight enough to restrict free movement. Your sheet may also have surcingles or straps below the belly, which should be snug but not overly tight for optimal comfort.
Safety Considerations
It’s recommended that you observe your horse wearing their exercise sheet to ensure that it fits properly without causing chafing, snagging, or discomfort.
An optimal fit will provide the best levels of comfort and support. You can also pair your exercise sheet with other protective gear, such as a tail guard and wither pad, to keep your horse comfortable and safe at all times.
Exercise Sheet Care Tips
Use a bristle brush to brush off dust, dirt, and debris from your exercise sheet after each use to prevent the build-up of grime and dirt. When washing your sheet, use a gentle horse gear detergent to protect the fabric, and rinse the detergent thoroughly after use.
Consider reapplying waterproofing spray after washing to maintain its protective layer, and allow it to dry completely before storage. Store horse exercise sheets away from direct sunlight to keep them looking and performing ideally for as long as possible.
