About Hat Silks
Rooted in equestrian tradition, hat silks have a rich history dating back to the early days of horse racing. Originally worn by jockeys to represent their stables or owners, hat silks have evolved into a versatile fashion statement for riders across disciplines. Today, they are available in a dazzling array of colors, patterns, and designs, allowing riders to express their unique style and personality.
Hat silks are designed to be worn over a specific type of riding hat known as jockey skull caps. Horse riding hat covers create the look of a fixed peak helmet, but in actual fact features a softer peak that ensures safety in the event of a fall and provides some protection for the riders face from the sun.
The Benefits of Wearing a Hat Silk
Protection
Not only are hat silks great for customising your helmet they also act as a shield, safeguarding your jockey skull from everyday wear and tear, scratches, dirt and other environmental conditions that may inevitably cause damage. Therefore using hat silks or riding hat covers hep to maintain your helmets integrity prolonging its lifespan.
Customization
With countless colours and design options available, using hat silks or covers offer the rider endless possibilities for personalization. Whether you prefer bold and vibrant colours like red or purple or subtle and elegant colours like brown, black or navy, you'll find amongst our stock a hat silk to match your style. Many leading brands such as Shires and LeMieux now launch new colours seasonally and with colour matching hat silks being part of their range which can help add the finishing touches to any matchy look.
Comfort
Many hat silks are made from soft, breathable, stretchy lycra materials designed to enhance comfort during long rides or competitions. Some styles such as the LeMieux Pro Mesh Hat Silk even featuring mesh panels providing optimal ventilation and improved breathability which is especially useful in warmer weather . The stretchy lycra material all enables a one size fits all approach - enabling riders to easily pull the hat silk or cover over any size of skull.
Visibility
Last but not least brightly coloured styles, hi-viz, and silver reflective hat silks or covers can increase rider visibility making riders and their horses more easily spotted by drivers whilst out hacking particularly in low-light conditions. Therefore are perfect for helping to keep riders safe.

Hat Silks FAQs
How do I fit a hat silks or riding hat covers over my riding helmet?
Fitting a silk or hat cover to riding helmets couldn't be simpler as generally one size fits all. Place your chosen hat silk over the top of your jockey skull or riding hat and stretch it fully all the way to the bottom, ensuring it covers the entire shell. Make sure the hat silk sits snugly around the base of the helmet and that any novelty features such as pom poms etc - like those on the LeMieux Pom Hat Silk are sitting on the top of the riding hat.
Do I need to wear a hat silk at competitions?
Hats silks are not a mandatory requirement for competitions but do add a level of professionalism to your overall look giving our helmets a smart and stylish finish. For dressage and show-jumping competitions we recommend plain or velvet styles of silks or hat covers in either black or navy. For team competitions of cross country a range of colours is permitted - purple, red, silver you name it! You can also add personalised and novelty details to your hat cover too which of course adds to the fun!
Can you wear a hat silk on peaked helmets?
Although designed to be worn with jockey skull caps, hat silks can indeed be used with normal peaked riding helmets to add splash of colour to your riding outfit.
